Mike is the real thing! He has been a working cowboy, a saddle bronc rider, a packer, and a horse trainer. He currently ranches in partnership with his younger brother, so both his writing, and speaking are very real! Alot of his poems and speeches are based on history which comes from being an avid student of the culture and history of the "real west"! Mike has been instrumental in establishing The BC Cowboy Hall of Fame, and has served four years as President of the BC Cowboy Heritage Society.

He is the only cowboy poet to have had his work read into the official record at a NASA launch and in the Canadian House of Commons. He not only performs at cowboy gatherings and festivals, but is now taking his poetry into schools, libraries and community halls throughout the West. His poetry appeals to a broad audience, not just ranchers and working cowboys, and he writes all of of his own poems. "I've performed at brandings, coffee houses and stock shows, done kindergarten classes, writer's workshops and a Biker's Bar-B-Q, all in the same week, I guess I'm fairly versatile."

Queens Golden Jubilee Award

The Queens Golden Jubilee Medal was presented to Mike along with 19 other upstanding citizens on Thanksgiving Day in recognition of outstanding community service. Kamloops MP Betty Hinton says "Thanksgiving is a time to pay thanks...well, what better time to reflect on the bounty, talents, and enthusiasm our community has to offer.

Created by the Department of Canadian Heritage to mark the Queen's 50th year as Queen of Canada, the award is for "people, who over the past 50 years have helped shape the Canada of today, as well as younger Canadians who are actively contributing to our future."
